I was reading this morning that the model Elle McPherson has lined her baby's cot with lead to deflect radiation, which as someone else said is "unavoidable and everywhere." Perhaps someone should direct her here? And what about lead poisoning?

You know you've arrived when...there is a Little Golden Book dedicated to you. I was reading Fred's blog this morning about treasured books. I started a collection of my own when the first grandchild was due. I looked for all the older books like Scuffy, Tootle, the Taxi that Hurried, The Poky Little Puppy etc. I check through the Golden Books occasionally to see what else has turned up as a reprint. I notice one now devoted to the Australian children's group "The Wiggles." True success. I don't begrudge them the book. They are much better than schmaltzy Disney characters. They are loved over here by practically every child from 1-4. Their concerts are always well attended and good value for the money and they seem to have a good rapport with their audience. In the time just after 11/9, they insisted on going ahead with their USA tour when others were cancelling for fear of further attacks.

Perhaps I'm getting old and testy and I know we can never return to the "good old days" because they never really existed, but has anyone else noticed a decline in what used to be called "manners?" I have just got out of a train where a young woman finished her breakfast and then spent the rest of her trip applying her makeup, while talking on her mobile. Yesterday in a bus, a young man was running his fingers through his unruly hair and scratching his head. Revolting clouds of dandruff flew out and I was glad I was nowhere near him. Today in a lift another person sneezed loudly and suddenly without any covering. Everybody jumped and he apologised. People push into lines, bump others at the shopping mall, use mobiles loudly in public places with private conversations.

A little old fashioned good manners may not actually be necessary, but certainly helps in many situations.

More on the Pan Pharmaceutical Ltd scandal. this company also makes cold and flu remedies and paracetamol tablets. Brand names for these have not been made public yet. Mayne Health has revealed they are investigating products and batch numbers. Two of their brands, Cenovis, Natures Own are affected. More to be revealed. Apparently claims were made for ingredients which hadn't been tested. Cross contamination occurred when machinery wasn't cleaned between batches, there were substitutions in ingredients, test results for various products were manipulayted and raw materials were claimed as suitable for use without testing. The original cause of investigation, the travel medicine caused many to be very sick, with some people hallucinating badly and attempting to literally jump ship or try to exit a plane. Other tablets had no effect.

It has just been announced that the TGA - Therapeutic Goods Administration has revoked the licence of Pan Pharmaceutical Ltd for six months and recalled from sale hundreds of vitamins and related natural health care products. The administration was alerted when a travel medicine provoked many complaints with some people showing severe reactions after taking it. It was found that in some cases, none of the active ingredient was found, while in others, up to 700 times the recommended dose was in the tablet.

This will have even wider ramifications tomorrow. Pan manufactures under contract for many other companies. These have not yet been listed, bit it is expected that there will be advertisements in the paper advising of recall from other brands as well.

The NSW government minister for transport is playing down claims of gross mismanagement of the rail system. Appointed only a couple of weeks ago, he apparently had not heard of a report which said that it would take 1.5 billion dollars in essential track maintenance work on the city track system to bring it up to full safety standards.. It was estimated that this work would take ten years to catch up on the backlog of maintenance! And what happens in those ten years? Do we get further behind? how long has the system been deteriorating?

My head is beginning to emerge from the thick fog of a heavy cold, so I'll try to catch up.
